2004 Tania now has her own website so for all the latest go to www.taniabailey.netDECEMBER 2003 3rd DecemberLOSES IN SECOND ROUND BUT FIRST WIN IN SEVEN MONTHS ON WISPA TOUR AT DOHA, QATAR -details below from from www.taniabailey.net- Tania claimed her first win in seven months by beating Becky Botwright the improving youngster from Manchester, 3-0 in the first round of the Qatar Classic setting up a second round encounter with her compatriot and friend Fiona Geaves. It is hoped that she has turned a corner in her fight to be illness free, by getting into the last 16 of one of the biggest events this year. She is however, yet to regain full fitness. From Qatar, Tania said... "I have been on court quite a lot this week, probably too much, but I needed the practice. I was really tired during the match though and my legs were really heavy. It will be hard against Fiona tomorrow, but at least I got through today." AND indeed it did prove to be a hard match, Tania lost in a close game against Fiona - as her website reports >>>> Tania had a very close match with Fiona Geaves in Qatar and was left wishing she had won a close first game. By the end of the match she was struggling to breathe and was on the verge of collapsing due to the work she was being asked to do. It was back in February that Tania last played more than one match in a tournament and this was evident as she had to work incredibly hard throughout this second round match. If Tania can stay illness free then this game may have provided an excellent workout and something to build on for next time in Hong Kong. We are hoping that this is the case. NOVEMBER 2003 13 NovemberTANIA HAS A GOOD CLOSE MATCH BUT LOSES IN DUTCH OPEN Jenny Duncalf managed to beat Tania 3-2 in the Dutch Open but Tania was pleased with the game and hopes to prepare well for the tournament in Doha, Qatar. OCTOBER 2003 15th OctoberTANIA WITHDRAWS IN FIRST ROUND OF US OPEN Ideally Tania wanted to take another six months off to fully recover, but decided to fly out to New York in a bid to maintain her place in the rankings and earn some money. She said: "I would like another six months working on my fitness, but unfortunately I need to earn some money and I want to maintain my ranking. "At the moment I am in a position where I don't have to qualify for tournaments so I can go over there and know that I will go through to the first round and pick up points for that." Tania was a beaten finalist at the US Open last year, but even though she was delighted to be back on court she didn't hold out much hope for her chances of winning even her first match stating, "It is a shame that I am going back and will not be able to compete properly, I really am not expecting to go anywhere in the tournament and will be surprised to get through my first match. I am looking forward to going out there and being back on the circuit and getting a match under my belt. Hopefully a few more solid months of training after this and I will be able to start working my way back up the rankings in the New Year." It was indeed, as she expected, a disappointing return to the WISPA World Tour when she conceded her first round match against Hong Kong qualifier Rebecca Chiu after taking the first game. The Asian Games champion Chiu won the second 9-2, before Tania retired with sinus problems. 5th October GOOD WARM UP SESSION IN NOTTINGHAM Tania, who has been out for several months with a mystery illness was enjoying a good warm-up session in Nottingham - where the British Open is currently being played. "When the draw closed over four weeks ago I wasn't sure I was going to be ready, so couldn't enter. My recovery has been going well though, and I feel as well now as I have for a long time." SEPTEMBER 2003 18th SeptemberTANIA MUST LEARN TO BREATHE Tania has been told she needs to learn how to breathe before she can walk out on a squash court again, reports Peterborough Now. The former world number four has suffered a nightmare eight months and has been forced to pull out of next month's British Open. Having been to see 10 doctors, undergone 12 blood tests and several scans her problems have been put down to her inability to breathe properly. Bailey has just undergone an operation on her nose at Nuffield Hospital near Cambridge to clear her nasal passages and hopes to be back playing within a month, once she has undergone breathing rehabilitation. "That last eight months have been a nightmare," said Bailey. "In all that time I have never managed to feel any better or anyone tell me exactly why I was feeling like I was. But now the specialists have put it down to the fact I can't breathe through my nose. I have not been able to since I was about 15. "I have scar tissue which is blocking my nostrils and I have been breathing through my mouth. Also I was told my breathing was too shallow, so I don't get enough oxygen into my lungs and that I use my chest muscles instead of my stomach muscles to breathe. So now I have to start breathing rehab and learn to breathe properly, but hopefully it will mean the end of my problems. "I am desperate to get back on court and get back to where I was. At the time I was playing the best squash of my career, but have now lost eight months and it will take time to get back to where I was. But I am still young and hopefully I have five or six injury-free years ahead of me." Bailey has targeted the Weymuller US Open in mid-October as a possible return date. JULY 2003 25th JulyTANIA AT NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SPORT IN MILTON KEYNES Tania is currently being monitored at the Institute of Sport and has tried all sorts to get back on the road to recovery. She has just undergone further tests at Addenbrooks in Cambridge to see if the problem can be located. She looks healthy enough but clearly this disguises the problem she has now had for over 6 months and she has ruled out playing for at least another 2 months. JUNE 2003 23rd JuneTANIA WAITING TO SEE SPORTS SPECIALIST Things aren't going too well for Tania at the moment - as the article in the Stamford Mercury shows - but Tania is going to see a sports specialist who will hopefully provide a better idea of how long the problem will last. 8th June TANIA WITHDRWAS AT QUARTER FINAL STAGE IN HURGHADA Cassie Jackman reached the semis without needing to contest her match against Tania. The previous evening Tania had found that her post viral fatigue had not fully cleared her system as she hoped. During the match against Carla Khan she visibly wilted. Drained of energy she realised that to even try to compete would not only be ineffectual but could cause her required extended break to become longer still were she to exacerbate her condition. She philosophically accepted this saying, "I know that I will only put myself back if I don’t take time to get my system clear of this". MAY 2003 21st MayTANIA GLAD TO BE BACK ON COURT Tania tries hard but lack of match practice shows. Owens confessed to being a little ragged during the match but Bailey was taking away positives: "I was pleased to be back on court and not feel terrible. I was starting to hit the ball better as the match went on."
APRIL 2003 18th AprilTANIA PROBLEMS WITH HEALTH Tania has been suffering with a mystery virus that has caused her to pull out of various tournaments in recent months. This has now been identified as the Epstein-Barr Virus. MARCH 2003 28th MarchTANIA WITHDRAWS FROM TEXAS OPEN IN DALLAS Natalie Grinham received a walkover as Tania is still suffering with flu virus that has been troubling her for a few months. For the other results in the tournament CLICK HERE FEBRUARY 2003 27th FebruaryTANIA RETIRES FROM SEMI FINAL MATCH IN NEW YORK After losing the first two games 9-4, 9-0, Tania retired from the match due to difficulty breathing - seemingly the lingering effect of a virus that she has had for a month or two. 15th February CASSIE JACKMAN BEATS TANIA IN SEMI FINAL OF NATIONAL SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS Cassie Jackman moved into her sixth successive National final, beating the new England number one Tania in a one-sided encounter.
Jackman opened up an early lead, which she never relinquished. "I played well, although Tania clearly wasn't at her best," said Cassie, "and I'm pleased to make another final after all my troubles." Tania said she had been suffering from a stomach virus since shortly after last weekend's Grantham Open. "I was really looking forward to this," she added, "but I felt pretty rough out there, and just couldn't do myself justice." 9th February TANIA LOSES TO CASSIE JACKMAN IN GRANTHAM OPEN FINAL A hard fought final saw No.1 seed Cassie Jackman defeat Tania. The final lasted 1hr 5mins producing some fine rallies between these well matched opponents. The match really hinged on the second game when Tania had an 8/3 lead but could not take advantage and Cassie came back to take the game 10/8. Final score: Cassie Jackman bt Tania Bailey - 9/6, 10/8, 1/9, 9/4. JANUARY 2003 30th JanaryTANIA SEEDED TO MEET SUZANNE HORNER IN QUARTER-FINALS In the National Squash Championships Tania has never progressed beyond the last eight before and is due to face veteran Suzanne Horner in the quarter-finals. The seventh seed from Yorkshire who celebrates her 40th birthday in February is a two-times champion, who made the first of her 22 Nationals' appearances in 1978 - a year before Tania was born! 19th Janary ENGLAND NUMBER ONE The new England Squash Rankings show that 2002 ended with a new women number 1, Tania Bailey. 17th November TANIA REACHES US OPEN FINAL After losing the first game in the semi-final, Tania began to take control of the match against Linda Charman, ranked one place higher. However, a calf injury received in the third game slowed Charman right down in the fourth and she conceded the match to give Tania a 6-9, 10-8, 9-3, 5-0 victory. Tania now faces Carol Owens, World No.1, in the final. 16th November "...ONE OF THE MOST PHYSICALLY GIFTED ATHLETES ON THE WISPA TOUR..." The Kiwis got away to an early lead, 5-1, before the English pair came back to win five points in a hand to sneak ahead 10-8. But in the seesawing battle on Rorani’s serve the New Zealanders closed it out 15-11 to take the early initiative. It all collapsed in the second however and suddenly England were ahead 6-1 and tired mistakes came from Rorani. "I was so tired and the mistakes were mine", said Rorani. The English girls concentrated their play on Rorani and as she collapsed and they won the second 15-5. "We were behind and I was desperate to get the points", said Rorani. "They played well. I thought I was playing good quality shots but Tania got them all back. She played on my side and she was harder to play than a man." Again in the third the English pair concentrated their play on Rorani. In long tough rallies, amongst the lets, the Kiwis got away to a 4-1 advantage. The Engalnd pair tenaciously came back to level the score at 4-4 to provoke shouts of 'Come on England' around the auditorium. Two unforced errors attempting drops, a mis-hit on a clinging ball and a cruel unlucky bounce saw New Zealand’s lead slip away. Then Jackman hit winners and England had the advantage 10-6. ![]() With some fortune and a no let the New Zealanders levelled and it was all to play for. Bailey smashed a crosscourt volley winner of serve to go ahead 11-10 before a rejuvenated Rorani found the gap behind Jackman after Owens had taken the English girl short under pressure. The tension was unbearable as the score reached 11 apiece. A mistake by Jackman hitting the tin and holding her head in anguish was followed by two exceptional winners one apiece from the New Zealanders and they stood at match point, 14-11. The English came back, saved two match balls to stand at 13-14, reviving home dreams but then Owens broke their hearts with an unreturnable straight kill and New Zealand had gold. Tania said: 'It was disappointing not to win gold but I'm pleased I won a medal'. 3rd August TANIA AND CASSIE THROUGH TO THE WOMEN'S DOUBLES FINAL Cassie Jackman and Tania Bailey won the all-English women's doubles semi-final against Charman and Geaves, but it was far from easy - 15-3, 16-17, 17-15. 2nd August TANIA HOPING FOR A MEDAL IN THE DOUBLES Tania along with doubles partner, Cassie Jackman, are still hoping for a medal in the Commonwelath Games - in the ladies doubles tournament. Ranked three, they have succeeded in the pool matches and have won their Quarter Final earlier today against the Welsh pair, Katrina Hogan & Karen Hargreaves, with a 15-4, 15-4 victory. This creates an all England clash in the semi-final tomorrow with Linda Charman and Fiona Greaves. JULY 2002 29th JulyTANIA TIPPED TO BE WORLD NUMBER 1 AFTER LOSING QUARTER FINAL Tania Bailey is a future squash world number one according to the woman who ended her Commonwealth Games medal hopes in the singles in Manchester. Seconds after her straight games quarter-final victory, New Zealander Carol Owens heaped glowing praise on the Stamford youngster. World number two Owens admitted Bailey might well have beaten her if she had won the opening game, which went agonisingly against her 10-9 after a titanic struggle. The New Zealander, who went on to win a silver medal, told the Mercury: "Tania can go right to the very top. She is very determined, quite fast about the court and she has a really strong backhand in her short game. "Tania is one of the players who puts the hard work in off the court and they are the ones who become champions in the game." Owens added: "That first game was incredibly tough I was hanging on because she is younger than me and had she won that it could have been a totally different story."
Bailey was devastated to lose that first game and she only managed to win one more point in the other two games.
Speaking with an ice pack on her lip, after being accidentally hit by Owens' racket during one of their furious rallies, Bailey said: "I felt very good when I was 9-8 up in the first game. "I was very upset to lose it but I should have come out and played as well again. "But I felt very negative as it went on and began to think it was not going to be my night." She added: "This is my first Commonwealth Games and I will be stronger next time. "The other top girls in the sport are eight to 10 years older than me so I am confident about the future." 28th July TANIA WINS HER SECOND ROUND MATCH IN COMMONWEALTH GAMES With a comfortable victory, 9-1, 9-3, 9-3, over Melanie Jans - Tania now has a tough Quarter Final tomorrow, meeting the No.2 seed, Carol Owens. A highly-focussed Fitz-Gerald, unbeaten since August last year, cruised to a 9-0 9-0 9-2 victory over Bailey in 20 minutes after conceding only nine points on the way to her second Welsh Open final. "It's great to win the title here again in Wales - I was very pleased with the way I played," said the in-form Australian. Tania pushed the World No.1 losing 9-1,7-9,9-1,9- 2 after 46 minutes. Sarah used her power and length to pick up where they had left off in the British Open, to dominate the first game. Tania came back after the break determined and fired up. She rallied and played some excellent cross courts from the front which caught the World No.1 out of position a number of times. Sarah stood 8-3 down in the second, but rallied back to catch up to 7-8 before making an error that gave Tania the game second game. At one-all Sarah increased her effort and returned to court and immediately regained control and dominance for the rest of the match, providing a convincing win. 12th May SEMI FINAL WIN AGAINST STEPHANIE BRIND Tania has now set up another match with the World No.1 against Sarah Fitzgerald after beating Steph in 4 games - 9/1 9/4 6/9 9/3. "I was a little on edge because Tania has been playing so well and that feeling really never left me the whole match, though I calmed down a bit." Bailey tried to slow down Pohrer but Pohrer's control of the match prevented that. "I like to power it more than she does," said Pohrer. "She plays it more traditionally, keeping it up and down for a longer game. My goal is to up the pace and change direction of the ball a lot." APRIL 2002 16th April"BAILEY’S DAY WILL COME WITHIN FOUR YEARS" - Click here to see the report from Squash Talk 15th April SARAH FITZ-GERALD BEATS TANIA IN BRITISH OPEN FINAL
Despite the scoreline making it look like a quick match, 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 - the match lasted for 34 minutes.
Tania made a good effort to respond to Sarah's confident opening surge and pulled back from 5-1 to 5-3, but unfortunately she failed to win another point as the world number one dominated proceedings. Fitz-Gerald said: "I am pleased to have got another British Open out of the way and I am looking forward to coming back to this magnificent venue for the Commonwealth Games in the summer. Tania is a very good young player and I am sure we will see much more of her at the final stages of main events in the future." 14th April TANIA BEATS CASSIE AND IS NOW INTO THE FINAL OF THE BRITISH OPEN Tania Bailey reached her first British Open final, beating Cassie Campion in a see-saw women's semi-final.
Tania began in positive fashion and Cassie looked a little nervous at the start. Tania took the first game 9-2 but Cassie turned the tables in the second, playing in a far more positive fashion to win the game 9-3. We now had a battle on our hands and it was Tania who came out fighting in the third. She stepped up the pace again and made very few mistakes as she won it 9-4. Cassie took the fourth 9-3 but could not maintain her dominance as Tania raced to a 5-1 lead in the fifth. But Cassie hit back to lead 6-5 before again recovering to nick it 9-7. A very apt description, because at 7-7she got a back-wall nick to move to match ball. She finished with a penalty stroke to enter her first British Open final.
"After the second game I tried to hit the ball cross-court," explained Bailey, "Cassie was cutting off anything straight and I won a lot of points on cross-courts. I've only ever beaten Cassie when she was really injured, and I don't think I believed I could beat her until yesterday's match, which gave me lots of confidence." A philosophical Campion was "disappointed not to make the final, but I played as well as I could - I just felt a bit laboured. I can't take anything away from Tania though, she played really well."
13th April TANIA WINS QUARTER FINAL MATCH AGAINST WORLD NUMBER 2 Tania blasted world number two Carol Owens off court for the best win of her career.
Tania dominated from the start, with Owens always struggling to keep up.
"I think I played really well," said Bailey to the crowd afterwards. "I hadn't even thought about the next match because Carol is such a fantastic player, although she made a lot of errors today. This is my best win, and now I've got to play another great player in Cassie. I'm really looking forward to it though, this is my first British Open semi-final."
11th April THE WORLD NUMBER 5 RETIRES INJURED The match started off as a close affair. Tania started well to take the first game.
Linda fought back to take the next two games.
Tania started very well in the fourth to go 3-0 up, when she then crashed into Linda causing her to limp a little. Linda then requested an injury break for a dead leg and had an off-court physio come to help.
Unfortunately for Linda, she had to retire injured after 55 minutes of play. Tania now has a tough quarter final match, on Saturday, against Carol Owens the World Number 2. All the rest of the matches are now being played at the NATIONAL SQUASH CENTRE in Manchester.

'Hopefully in a couple of weeks' time I can start training again. My ranking has gone down and it will probably get a bit lower.' 'But I am confident I can get back into the top five and make the Commonwealth Games team.' Highlight of 2001 was reaching a final in New York and achieving her highest world ranking of five.
