STAMFORD GREEN MAN v CAMBRIDGE 2 (back to fixtures list)
After a couple of years of talking about it the Stamford 1st team finally got themselves into the Cambridge leagues where the squash is played to a higher standard. A convincing league win last year in the Peterborough leagues finally convinced us we need to move to the Cambs leagues; so here we are. 1st game of the season and a sense of uncertainty is in the air, not knowing how we will fair against the new opposition.
First up was the Barker brothers. Simon (team captain) was on against Phil Easton. The first game was closely fought with Phil demonstrating nice racket skills and forcing Simon around the court. Good running from Simon though and a telling ¾ court boast was enough to take the first. The pressures off now thought Simon as he was receiving worldly advice from Yorkie. How wrong, as Phil's delicate short game had Simon scampering all over court in the second and in trouble. 1-1. Not to worry some more advice from Yorkie, Mark and a few others in the break saw Simon come out for the third in complete disarray. What a nightmare as Phil swept away to go 8-3 up. In an act of desperation Simon resorted to what he knows best. Blast it to the back as loose and with as little width as possible. A cunning plan completely fooling Phil and saw Simon fight back to 8-8. A marathon battle for the last two points finally saw Simon snatch it 10-9 to go 2-1 up. A big effort from Phil in the fourth was enough to make it 2-2 but for a severe fitness cost allowing Simon a comfortable win in the fifth to take the tie 3-2.
Richard was on the other court against Craig Scott. Richard started strongly playing good squash and looking sharp. Plenty of good running and some accurate shots from Richard gave him the first game. A much harder second game as Craig started to hit better shots and pulled away. A hard fight back from Richard showing excellent commitment brought the game to 8-8. With his confidence high now Richard hit some great shots to take the second 10-8. Again fitness started to tell in the third as Craig struggled with Richards speed around the court allowing Richard enough time to control the game to win the tie 3-0.
Jonathon Oakley on next against Steve Pottle. Jon started slowly looking a bit ring rusty after his lengthy summer holiday from work. Half a yard short for many shots and much looser than normal Jon was struggling to find form. After losing the first two 9-6 and 9-6 Yorkie offered some choice words of advice as to what he thought of Jon's lack of desire to win. This seemed to spur Jon on as he began to attack the game, re-introducing the "Oakley slap" - a textbook shot where he wrong foots his opponent by playing a short cross court shot from a perfect straight drive position, and not seen since last season. Steve struggled to cope with Jon's better width and length and began to suffer. 9-5 to Jon in the third. More of the same in the fourth saw Jon take that 9-3 to make it 2-2 and with Steve now struggling to stay with the pace Jon had a comfortable win the fifth to take the tie 3-2. An excellent comeback, which meant Stamford, had now won their first Cambs league match.
Mark Smith on court now against Duncan Fraser. The knock up identified Duncan as a wily player with a good selection of shots. As the first got under way though Mark stormed away. During the summer break we can only assume he has learnt a new shot called "the boast" and was determined to demonstrate it. The first game saw 8 consecutive winners from his new shot preventing Duncan from settling at all and taking the first 9-2. The second and third went the same way with Mark proving to fast around the court for Duncan and way to accurate and consistent with his shots. A comfortable win for Mark 3-0.
Yorkie on last and at 4-0 the pressure was on not to be the only team member to lose. Barry Smith was his opponent, a big hitter of the ball with also a good selection of shots. The first few points were tightly contested with both players hitting the ball crisply. As the rallies continued though Barry began making mistakes giving Yorkie the edge. A hard first game with Yorkie taking it 9-5. The second saw even more mistakes from Barry as tiredness started to creep in. Yorkie kept the pressure on drilling the ball to the back of the court and then dropping forcing Barry forward. With Barry's legs going Yorkie took the second 9-2 and finished the third 9-1. Another excellent win 3-0 as Stamford won the tie 5-0. Home again next week - come on!
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v FRANK LEE 2 (back to fixtures list)
After last weeks excellent start to the season Stamford Green Man were confident and looking forward to tonight’s match. Again it was the Barker brothers that got the show under way.
Richard Barker was on against Mike Wilson. Richard started strongly looking sharp on court. Good court movement from Richard allowed him time on the ball and saw him playing to a consistent good length and width. Mike fought hard to stay with game but was under continual pressure causing too many errors securing the first for Richard 9-2. The next two games saw Richard again making very few errors, putting Mike under too much pressure resulting in Richard taking them 9-4 and 9-2. A solid start for Stamford winning the first tie 3-0.
Simon Barker was court next door playing Andy Newman. Andy proved a little unorthodox and as the first game got under way Simon was struggling to find form. However as the game progressed Simon began hitting a better length and used a very effective boast to work Andy around the court. This turned a close first game at the halfway point, with Simon comfortably taking it 9-5. The second game Simon dominated, moving well and hitting hard, giving no time for Andy to settle causing errors. 9-1 to Simon. Much of the same in the third with Andy now tiring provided Simon with a comfortable win 9-3 and the tie 3-0.
Next on was Mark Smith playing James Richardson. James looked good in the knock up and concerned looks from the balcony were noted amongst the Stamford players as to whether Mark would cope with James’s pace and accuracy. As the game got under way though the team relaxed as Mark overwhelmed James with tight shots, good length and his newly found boast proving it was no fluke after being magnificently demonstrated last week. Outstanding as Mark cruised through 9-1. The second game saw Mark in different form. Never before has 90 seconds (time between games) caused such a radical change in game plan. Mark came out confident that he could hit everything into the tin. To ensure this occurred he resorted to tactics such as framing the shot, allowing the ball to go past him as far as possible before attempting an impossible boast (not even the new improved boast could cope) and finally, completely missing the ball. Gasps of despair were heard from the balcony as he lost the second 9-2. With the pressure firmly on Mark now, much soul searching was required and again the 90 second break transformed Mark back into some semblance of a squash player as he started to compete and produce much better shots. As Mark relaxed he took control of the match comfortably winning the next two 9-1 and 9-3 taking the tie 3-1.
Jonathon Oakley (team fashion consultant) took on Dave Blexham. Jonathon was modelling a girly sweat absorbing top, which caused several breaks in the game as he had to re-adjust the label to ensure it was visible to all. This clearly unnerved Dave who was obviously not used to playing on a catwalk. Jon however was fired up for the game and played consistent, accurate squash, mixing it up and wrong footing Dave on a number of occasions. Dave was unable to cope with Jon’s domination on the court and was continually digging out of the corners or playing shots off balance. Such pressure gave Jon the tie 9-2, 9-2, 9-0.
Last on was Paul York against Chris Boswell. The knock up saw Yorkie hitting numerous nicks, leathering the ball as he attempted to intimidate Chris. This worked well! Chris was unable to cope with Yorkie’s power and accuracy and lost the first very quickly with Yorkie barely breaking sweat. Again though the 90 second break monster got Yorkie as he completely lost the plot and played the second “like a Muppet”. Chris took full advantage of the situation running out to an 8-3 lead in the second whilst Yorkie continually verbally abused himself throughout. At 8-3 down and finally some of the old magic re-appeared as he clawed his way back to 8-8. Excellent battling saw Yorkie eventually take the second 10-8. Yorkie was seen walking off court for the break, phone in hand, obviously needing to phone a friend. 2-0 up now and Chris, disheartened after losing the second, never got into the third. Yorkie’s phone call obviously worked (or was it 90 seconds of web surfing looking for pictures of ice cream), as he blasted his way to victory 9-0.
Another superb victory for the new boys in the Cambs leagues. Apologies go out to all opposing team members who have to suffer Yorkie’s detailed analysis as to what makes good ice cream, (self confessed guru on all things ice cream related). Concern was raised as to the amount of tasting required in the job as Yorkie took the “wide load” sticker off his arse.
FENLAND 1 v STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
Stamford were starting to feel a little more confident now after a great start to the season winning both games 5-0. Fenland however were in the same position with two 5-0 nil victories under their belt.
Richard Barker got the match under way for Stamford playing Tim Dean. Richard played very well in the previous two matches and was looking to maintain that form. From the start both players played good controlled squash rallying well and hitting accurately. Richard, looking a little more comfortable, was able to control the rallies and with Tim unable to find any winners found the game drifting away from him. Richard kept the pressure up making no unforced errors until he found himself winning the first 9-0. The second started the same with Tim trying to remain calm but unable to pick a point up. As Richard again started to pull away Tim finally found that elusive point. Would this open the floodgates? Richard though kept it steady and seemingly got more accurate and tighter and took the second 9-1 finishing on a lovely cross-court nick. The pressure was on Tim now as they started the third. As try as he did Tim though was unable to break Richard's focus and consistency and dropped the third 9-1 giving Richard the tie 3-0. Outstanding squash from Richard clearly pressing for promotion within the team.
On the other court was Jon Oakley against Paul Kynoch. The first game saw Paul work Jon hard as he moved him around the court forcing a couple of errors early on. As Jon settled into it though the rallies evened up with Jon's unorthodox cross court, short, slap shots at the front of the court picking him up a couple of points. Halfway through the first Jon started edging ahead and just did enough to take the first 9-7. The second saw Jon step the pressure up and although not as tight as normal Jon was able to do enough to work Paul hard enough to force the errors, and take the second 9-4. The third went the same way with Paul beginning to tire allowing Jon a more comfortable 9-3 win to take the tie 3-0.
Simon Barker on next against Andy Prendergast - a clash of the team captains. Both players began the game confidently with Simon again determined to break the land speed record for a squash ball but having little regard for accuracy. Andy started strongly taking advantage of a number of errors from Simon and moving to a 5-0 lead in the first. Simon fought hard to recover and finally pulled back to 8-8 only to hit another couple of tins to drop the first 10-8. The second saw a calmer more focused Stamford captain as he finally eased the power down. Some hard running from Simon and now hitting a better length and width enabled him to dominate the second taking it comfortably 9-1. The third saw Andy fighting hard to get back into the game and pressing Simon hard but failing to win the point when the opportunity arose, instead hitting the tin. A hard game but Simon doing enough to take it 9-5 to go 2-1 up. The fourth saw Andy again come out strong but with Simon still retrieving everything Andy's resolve finally caved in and Simon took the fourth comfortably 9-0 and the tie 3-1.
Mark Smiths turn now as he found himself up against David Grant. Mark took control of the first from the off moving David from front to back, electing to play a selection of shots not recently seen the development of Mark's boast. A hard first game but Mark moving well and playing accurate shots took it safely 9-4. David came out with a vengeance hitting hard and low, working Mark hard. Consistent retrieving and a cool head saw Mark through as he persevered to take a hard fought second 9-7. The third again started well but with David unable to keep the tempo high Mark took control again for another comfortable 9-2 win and the tie 3-0.
Last on again was Paul York against Jamie Wardley. Yorkie now fully fit (or should I say fully recovered from injury and reasonably fit) looked fluid and unhindered as he moved around the court. Jamie fought with tenacity but was unable to cope with Yorkie's accuracy and power. Some excellent rallies followed but Yorkie consistently that bit tighter and finding the nick took the first 9-2. The next two games followed the same as Jamie struggled to contain Yorkie and put any pressure on him. Yorkie finally winning them 9-1, 9-0 and the tie 3-0.
Another excellent result from the team to go top of the table after three matches and talk of promotion was in the air - or are we soon to come crashing down?? Away to St Ives next week. Come On.
ST IVO v STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
Stamford now are really on a roll and confidence is high. Played 3, won 3 with everyone still undefeated. This was now generating its own pressure though as no one wants to be first to lose. St Ivo is the opposition tonight playing at their courts. Let the match begin!
Simon Barker was on first against Bob Taylor. Simon, still looking to find the same form shown through the summer, started ok, battled well and as usual ran for everything. Bob showed great recovery skills with an extraordinary reach enabling him to loaf at one side of the court, stretch out and pick off Simons tight shot hugging the other wall. Running became the issue and Simon just did enough to take the first 9-7. The second saw an even more determined Bob as he put Simon under pressure playing hard and low drives. Simon worked hard to retrieve but struggled to find a decent length and width (again) allowing Bob many chances to finish the points. This he did and took the second 9-5 to go 1-1. Copious advice/criticism/derision was again offered to Simon during the break which would have broken a lesser man, but not the captain as he came out fighting for the third. Better squash from Simon put Bob under too much pressure and allowed Simon a comfortable third 9-5. Much of the same in the fourth with Bob now tiring gave game to Simon 9-5 and the tie 3-1 to Stamford.
Richard Barker was on next door against Ian Hill. Richard had played superbly over the last few matches and expectations were high again tonight. As the match got under way though Ian’s awkward reverse angles caught Richard cold and flatfooted. Many a winner was played from this shot, as Richard could not settle into the game. The first to Ian 9-4. The second saw a more intense Richard as he endeavored to read Ian’s game. More accurate shots from Richard and now seeing some of the reverse angles saw him do enough to take the second 9-6. Still not comfortable with his game Richard again struggled in the third and good battling by Ian with some unorthodox shots thrown in was enough to take it 10-9. Richard now 2-1, struggling and panic setting in as he realised he could be the first to be beaten. Drawing upon all his dogged determination that has served him so well selling diggers he attacked the game and though never looking safe he took the fourth the level it 2-2. Disaster struck in the fifth for Ian as his legs gave out allowing to Richard to dominate and clean up 9-0 to take the tie 3-2.
Jonathon Oakley went next playing Malcolm White. Jon also started poorly lacking his normal fluidity around the court. Malcolm picked his shots and played some nice winners to secure the first 9-5. The break gave Jon chance to reassess his tactics. As the second began Jon’s movement was much improved and he took control of the rallies, moving Malcolm well and with few errors had a comfortable 9-1 win. The third saw a much closer game as both players played well, some good rallies but Jon just edged it 10-8. The fourth saw Malcolm run out of steam and Jon cruised through 9-1 and took the tie 3-1.
Mark Smith’s turn now against Gary Asquith. The tie started hard and fast with both players playing excellent squash. Rally after rally of tight driving, accurate boasting and some superb retrieving finally resulted in Mark just taking the first 10-9. The second was a carbon copy and at 9-9 you felt the odds would got to Gary, but no. Mark hitting an outstanding boast to take the second 10-9 to go 2-0 up. The third saw Mark relax just a little allowing Gary back in the tie to take it 9-6 and back to 2-1. Crisis now in the break as Mark complained of an injury. Was it all over, had Mark bottled it after two superb games? As they came out for the fourth the answer was soon apparent as Mark again played outstanding squash to destroy Gary 9-0 and take the tie 3-1. Was this the new, mentally stronger Smithy?? Time will tell!
Finally now was Paul York against Nigel Taylor. Nigel took the game to Yorkie attempting to blast him off the court but to no avail. Paul was too strong and was soon dominating with more than his fair share of nicks being hit. Accurate length and width hit with pace was too much for Nigel as Yorkie took the tie comfortably 9-2, 9-6, 9-4.
Another win for Stamford Green Man to go four in a row to sit clearly on top of the Cambs second division having yet to drop a tie. Now it’s talk of promotion; Div 1, up with the big boys. Come on!
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v HUNTS COUNTY 2 (back to fixtures list)
The team arrived early at the club for a team photo for the paper and official handing over of new kit from AWARE Promotional Merchandise in Peterborough. After much pruning and argy bargy in the line up, the photos were taken and dressed in smart new kit we took on Hunts County.

Yet it again it fell to the Barker brothers to kick the match off with Richard to play Peter Dampney. Richard started well, playing controlled squash and keeping the ball away from Peter. A comfortable first game saw Richard through 9-3. The second game went horribly wrong as Rich had the game from hell, finding himself out of position, hitting poor shots and generally playing very muppet like. This cost him the game 9-5 and tied it 1-1. A slightly more invigorated Barker came for the third but was still drifting the ball around the court with no conviction. Some poor finishing from Peter kept Richard in the rallies and remarkably came through to take the third 9-3. The fourth was much the same but Rich kept his head to take it 9-5 and the tie 3-1 to maintain his unbeaten record.
Simon was on the other court against Andy Fuller. Attempting to end his run of, some would say loose (ish) squash, Simon went for plan B which was to up the power a bit more, after all his motto is "if in doubt - hit it harder." This had the following effect: The first was the slightly more erratic nature of the flight of the ball (given that all parts of the racket were used in an effort to gain more power ie frame, handle and occasionally strings). The second was that although not exactly tight, with the ball travelling at light speed Andy did have problems controlling his own shots. This gave Simon plenty of loose balls to put away. Too much pressure for Andy allowed Simon a fairly comfortable win 9-5, 9-6, 9-4. Was the ice cream in the bag?
Mark Smith followed Richard on, to play Paul Godwin. This had the makings of a good match, as both players are good runners. Sure enough the first couple of rallies saw some major running. Paul settled down quickly and made few errors. Although the rallies were tight it seemed Mark made the mistake first and allowed Paul to take the first 9-5. The second saw an immediate improvement in Mark's game as he took control. Tight drives and playing short to move Paul about allowed Mark a convincing 9-1 to level it 1-1. The third was a marathon with both players running and retrieving superbly. A very entertaining and tense third saw Mark under pressure and after one unforced error he just had to check to see if his racket could fly. After retrieving it he got back into it to just steal it 10-8. Disaster for Mark in the fourth as he seemed to switch off and Paul took advantage with a quick and easy 9-3 win to level it 2-2. Pressure was on Mark for the fifth, as the match report for the first to lose (unless it's me) will be harsh! The game started closely with both players chasing everything; then Mark sneaked a couple of points and stretched the lead to 7-3. Excellent battling by Paul saw around seven handouts at 7-3. Would Mark collapse under pressure. Nope. He came through to take the fifth 9-3 and the tie 3-2. Well played.
Jon Oakley was playing next door against Dave Moreau. Dave pulled some tricky shots out of the bag but struggled to match Jon’s game which has to be said was somewhat in disarray for most of the tie. Fortunately Jon was able to do enough to keep Dave under pressure and though by far not his best performance, (in fact joining Richard in the muppet club and even managing to look like Fozzy bear) he took the tie 9-5, 9-6, 9-7. A comfortable win but not enough to nick the ice cream from the captain’s grasp. Could Yorkie do it?
So here it was the last game; Paul York against John Ford. From the off John looked a threat to Yorkie, picking up his hard drives and well hit cross courts and returning them tight and to a good length. Yorkie struggled to find his own game and made loads of errors. Ears were blocked as Yorkie's shrill cry of disdain was heard after every point as he lost the first 9-3. Encouragement from the captain (as the ice cream was now safely in the bag) during the break and words of wisdom such "hit it harder" had the desired effect. The second saw Yorkie make fewer mistakes and start to work John hard. This gave him the edge as he took it 9-5 to even things up. Much of the same for the next two games, with errors reducing even more and the cut drop shot working again, giving Yorkie them 9-6 and 9-5 to take the tie 3-1.
Another 5-0 win. Home next week to Ely where they have an ex pro playing 1 for them. Best of luck Yorkie. Take no prisoners.
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v ELY PARADISE (back to fixtures list)
Just when you thought the team were cruising in the league it get's even easier - the team had a walkover!
CROWN LODGE 1 v STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
On a dark, dark, night, in the dark, dark Fens the undefeated Stamford squash team battled through the icy fog, intent on giving Crown Lodge a right good thrashing. Brimming with over confidence, new rackets and an arrogant air, the lads from Stamford strutted onto court with an expectant air of victory. Was pride going to come before a fall?
First on the psychedelically painted courts was Simon Barker, playing a lean and mean Robin Attersley. Simon was looking a little jaded from the start and Peter sneaked the first 9-7. In the second Simon managed to string a few good shots together and clawed his way back to win 9-6. But, alas, this was only a false dawn. Simon had the glazed expression of a rabbit in the headlights, and, after losing the third 9-7, managed to waste a commanding lead in the forth to lose the match 3-1, and become the first team member to lose a match. It couldn't have happened to a nicer chap!
The shock waves intensified when Simon's brother, Richard Barker crashed out woefully against a chubby Peter Askew 3-2. Was this the end of Stamford's bid for promotion? The fabulous Barker Boys had gone down in flames - the end of an era.
It was now up to Jonathan Oakley and Mark Smith to mount a recovery. Smithy, after a shaky start found his form to clinically see off Paul Swallow 3-1.
Jonathan, however, playing Stephanie Marriott (a Michelle Pfeiffer look alike) seemed more concerned about scoring in the bar afterwards than scoring points during the match. Stephanie played inspirational squash, with the style and accuracy that only women can. Jonathan politely kept the rallies going as long as possible and "threw" a couple of games for good measure. A classy performance earned Stephanie three match points and the respect of the gallery, before Jonathan, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to win 10-8 in the fifth and square the match 2-2. Stephanie, intent on revenge immediately pencilled the date of the return leg in her diary, - mission accomplished by Stamford!
Last on court was Paul York. Playing like a demon he dispatched Robert Murfitt with the determination and precision that we are coming to take for granted. With its reputation restored, the Green Man Squash Team can once again hold its head up high, but questions must be asked about the bottom end!
STAMFORD GREEN MAN V PORTUGAL PLACE (back to fixtures list)
After last weeks very narrow victory another hard match was ahead of us playing Portugal Place - last season’s relegation team from Div 1 and mainly consisting of university students. As they arrived at the courts, it was commented on that the combined age of their team was younger than Jon Oakley. A worrying statement.
First on court was Richard Barker playing Stewart McTavish. Stewart started strongly, taking the ball early and volleying well. Richard tried to counter with accurate squash but couldn’t get tight enough giving Stewart to much time to take the first 9-3. The second went the same way with Richard covering miles on court to keep himself in the rallies but again couldn't prevent Stewart from cutting the ball off with winners, 9-5 to Stewart. Advice from the captain during the break seemed to inspire Barker junior as he came out all guns firing and reversed the pressure. Now it was Stewart on the back foot as Richard played winners from volleys and drops. A tense game though as Stewart fought hard but Richard hung on and took the third 10-9. The fourth started with a runaway for Stewart as Richard struggled to up the pace again. At 5-1 down though, he recovered his game to 5-4 before deciding the first two had drained too much and finally lost after a valiant attempt 9-4. 1 to Portugal.
Jon Oakley was on next door against Joe Devereux and preceded to give his opponent "a right good thrashing". Jon's game seemed to totally bemuse Joe as he strolled through for a comfortable 3-0 win dropping only 9 points. One tie all.
Barker senior on next against Jaques Van Oorschot (another international they had drafted in the strengthen their squad, determined to halt the run of wins from Stamford squad). The first game was a hard battle with Jaques running like a rabbit on speed and retrieving everything. Simon running out of ideas finally relinquished the first 9-7. The second was another hard-hitting game with both players running for everything but Jaques again proving to sharp for Simon as he took the second 9-3. A talking to for the captain in the break focused Simon's game plan and playing a good short game caught Jaques napping a the back of the court to take the third 9-4. Portugal now only 2-1 and the fight back was on. The fourth though saw Jaques back his best as Simon, continuously under pressure struggled to get any advantage. Comments from the balcony such as "I hope Simon isn't relying fitness to win this one" as Jaques again retrieved the impossible only to hit a lucky winner off it obviously didn't help. Jaques finally taking the fourth 9-5 and the tie 3-1. Stamford 2-1 down now. Pressure was on!
Mark Smith on now against Jaco Vermack. Mark (having decided that any previous poor matches in his life have been due to eating bananas during the day and on a new dietary regime of NO bananas) started strongly and blasted Jaco off the court for only 5 points and the coveted ice cream. Excellent squash from Mark giving Jaco no chance to settle into any rhythm and a stream of tins cost him dearly; 9-0, 9-1, 9-4. Stamford level 2-2.
Last on was Yorkie against Hussein Said. This was the match of the night as marathon rally after marathon rally took place. Superb squash from both players with Hussein’s retrieving unbelievable at times. Yorkie lost the first but went on to win the next two. Looking for the fourth to take the match Yorkie found Hussein fighting for everything and doing enough to snatch it 9-7. 2 games all and all to play for. Both players seeming tired but still running and getting to everything. The fifth began and Yorkie had a mare, suddenly finding the tank empty and going 6-2 down when the ball burst. The few minutes to warm a new ball seemed the turning point as Yorkie clawed his way back to 7-7. After some tense points and a perfectly timed dead nick at the back for Yorkie he finally snuck the victory 9-7 and the match 3-2. Stamford escape again with a 16-8 point victory thank you very much. Still unbeaten with only Brampton to go in the first half of the season.
BRAMPTON V STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
This was the last game of the first half of the season and was a league and cup double header. Stamford, unbeaten so far, were confident going into the match.
Barker brothers on first with Simon playing Rhys Power. A clash of the captains. After a steady start it soon became apparent that Simon was too strong for Rhys. A good line and length from Simon put Rhys under too much pressure at the back of the court and allowed him a comfortable win 9-5, 9-0, 9-2 (and the revered ice cream).
Richard was on next door against Martin Cadoe. Richard, still struggling to find the devastating form seen earlier in the season, was still too strong for Martin and kept control of the game forcing Martin into the corners to produce the errors. Another comfortable win 9-3, 9-7, 9-4.
Mark Smith was on next against Roy Pickerill. Roy's big hitting was soon to put Mark under pressure as he struggled to find his normal rhythm. Mark made an unusual number of errors and Roy took full advantage taking the first 9-5. The second was just as fast and furious and was nip and tuck all the way but this time Mark just doing enough to steal it 10-8. The third saw some excellent drops from Roy and more unforced errors from Mark. Mark was becoming frustrated with his game now the third slipped from his grasp 9-7. The fourth started evenly but then Roy started to edge away until he suddenly "hit the wall" and really started to feel the pace. Mark clawed his way back to 8-8 and Roy's legs on autopilot called 1 point. A last big effort from Roy saw him steal the game 9-8 to take the match 3-1. Brampton were fighting back!
Jon Oakley looked set for a tough match against John Palin - a wily and fit player. Jon 0, who seems to play better every week (except where women are involved), started well, immediately getting into his stride and moving well around the court. Tight driving and an excellent short game put John P under immense pressure and was unable to dominate any of the points losing the first 9-3. The second went the same with Jon O giving nothing away as he cruised to 9-0 in the second. Jon P stepped the pace up in third and finally started to put Jon O under pressure as he failed to up the pace with him. A closely fought third until Jon O finally regained control to take it 10-8 and the tie 3-0.
Last on was Paul York playing Paul Burkett. The first saw some draining rallies, as PB tactics were to work Yorkie as much as possible. Some good kill shots gave Yorkie a slight edge as he nicked the first 10-9. PB tightened up in the second and hit consistently to a good length and width. Mixing up his game to work Yorkie whenever possible proved a good tactic as errors from Yorkie started to creep in giving the second to PB 9-6. The same pattern followed in the third with Yorkie struggling to stay with the pace. PB in full control and took the third 9-4. After a stiff talking too from each member of the team during the break Yorkie, bamboozled with advice, tips and derision from the team came out fighting. A big effort in the fourth saw some excellent rallies. Very steady squash from PB, literally making no unforced errors, kept Yorkie working hard. Neck and neck to the end, Yorkie finally pinched the game 10-9 to level it 2-2. Concern from the team during the break as Yorkie was audibly heard to be breathing out of both orifices (one of which was not on his face). Our fears were confirmed as Yorkie turned to Mr Jelly legs. After much screeching of self-criticism from Yorkie ("lazy git", "use your *&%ing legs" and other expletives) PB finally strolled through the fifth 9-3 and secured the tie 3-2.
So it was left to the lower order today to get the "big boys" out of trouble as Stamford win 3-2 and go through to the second half of the season undefeated and into the second round of the cup where we meet premier league opponents. Will it all be over?
CAMBRIDGE 2 V STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
This was the first game of the second half of the season, re-arranged and brought forward.
Just for a change Yorkie was on court first playing Simon Scott. After a sluggish start, Yorkie started to move better and was too strong for Simon. This was fortunate as plenty of short and loose shots from Yorkie failed to encourage Simon into playing winners. Yorkie took advantage of this and was able to dispatch Simon, dropping only 4 points 9-2, 9-1, 9-1.
Richard was next playing Craig Scott. Richard, not happy with his form of late, was late on court as he needs a good 5 minutes longer than everyone else in order to consume as many pain killers as possible. Richard also started slowly but with neither player able to capitalise on their serve the score stayed 1-1 for a while. Finally the drugs kicked in and Richard started to move with some fluidity. Now able to take control Richard breezed through to a comfortable win, 9-2, 9-3, 9-5.
Jon went next against Ian Merrick. This proved another comfortable win for Jon as was able to dominate the court and playing an excellent short game put Ian under too much pressure, 9-3, 9-7, 9-5.
Simon was on the court next door playing Luke Harman. This turned into an interesting battle as both players were determined to hit the ball harder than the other. After much leathering of the ball Simon came out on top with Luke finally running out of steam in the third. A victory for Simon 9-5, 9-0, 9-5.
Finally, last on was Mark against Duncan Fraser. Another slow start for Stamford as Duncan battled well against Mark who at one point looked in danger of losing the first. A swift recovery though, with some better shots put Mark in the driving seat for another comfortable win, 9-7, 9-2, 9-2.
A sound result taking the maximum 20 points putting us in a pretty much unassailable position at the top of Division 2.
The next match is a cup game on Jan 8th at home against Hunts County - one of the stronger Division 1 teams. If you fancy coming to watch us battle against one of the best teams in the Cambridge leagues, the match starts around 7-30pm. See you there.
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v HUNTS COUNTY (back to fixtures list)
This was the second round of Cambridgeshire's premier squash cup competition and Stamford's hardest test of the season playing a mid table first division team. This would also be a baseline for how we need to perform next year, assuming promotion, which subject to major disasters should be a certainty with our current lead in division two.
First up was the Barker brothers. Simon on against John Ford. As the match got under way it was apparent that this would be a test of Simons fitness as John's touch had Simon covering every inch of the court. A hard first saw it go to the wire with John just stealing it 10-9. The second carried on in the same fashion and Simon playing excellent squash, hitting a good length and uncharacteristically tight, took a commanding lead to 8-3 up before having a personal crisis and suddenly hitting the tin with a vengeance. John took full advantage and fought back to rob Simon of the second 10-8. 2 down and Simon was in trouble. The third saw a remarkable turn as Simon killed everything and took John apart to take it 9-0. Was the fight back on? The pace was starting to tell now and Simon was again being run all over the court. Using all available bodily orifices to breath through Simon was unable to repeat the third and John took the forth and the tie 3-1.
Richard was on the other court against Dave Goodwin. Both played good controlled squash, playing to length and relying on accuracy over power and as both left handers played the whole match in the backhand court both determined to exploit each others weaker side. Dave took the first two but Richard determined as ever fought back to take the next two to level the tie at 2- 2. The fifth was critical if Stamford were to have any chance of winning the match. The first few points went very evenly before Richard won a quick few points to give him a lead. He never looked back then as he drove on to win the fifth 9-6 and level the match 1-1.
Mark Smith on next against Duncan Colquhoun. Duncan started strongly attacking everything and Mark, playing not at his best, hit tin after tin of unforced errors. After an easy first Duncan remained in control and with Mark suffering from cramp, Duncan took the second 9-6. A fightback in the third gave renewed hope to Stamford as Mark stole it 10-9 but to no avail as Duncan did enough in the fourth to secure it 9-7 and the tie 3-1.
Jon Oakley on next door against Adrian Slade. Both players opting for the touch, drop shot flicky style, some would call squash. It was a test of speed on court and Jon had too much for Adrian. Not pretty squash but very effective from Jon as he cruised through 9-8, 9-4, 9-0 and Stamford were level again at 2-2.
Down to the number ones now to decide the fate. Yorkie on against Andrew Stevenson. Yorkie started strongly massacring everything, volleying well and hitting great width. Andrew battled well but made too many errors as Yorkie dominated the first two 9-2 and 9-3. The third saw Andrew working harder, volleying more and hitting tighter shots. Yorkie seemingly taken his foot off the pedal slightly struggled to step up as Adrian took the third. Finger nails just starting to be bitten by the Stamford lads now as the fourth got under way. Some excellent rallying from both players finally saw Yorkie gain Match ball at 8-5. Surely it must be over- but wait. Andrew playing superbly well picked up everything to pull it back to 8-8. The atmosphere on the balcony was tense then it was over. Andrew had come back to take the fourth and level the tie at 2-2. Yorkie started the fifth head down and unable to cope with Andrews awesome retrieving and at 5-1 down it looked like curtains for Stamford. Much encouragement from the balcony saw Yorkie find reserves from somewhere as he dug immensely deeply and found the desire to get back into it. Playing great squash and rallying superbly Yorkie battled back and after facing match points against him finally clawed it back to 8-8. Tensions were high on the balcony as fortunes turned and after a fantastic match Yorkie finally clinched it 10-8 to win the match 3-2 and put Stamford in the quarterfinals. Come on!!
A fantastic match played in the best traditions of sportsmanship. Many thanks to those that supported us on the night and a pleasurable pint was had afterwards!
WHAT.... A SKI REPORT? (back to fixtures list)
The squash fixture for this week was rearranged because a large proportion of the squash team were skiing - so for this week you have a ski report.
The regulars, Simon Barker (captain), Richard Barker and subs Adrian Chappell, Simon Richardson were joined by a couple of other squash players Mark Davis and Martin Brewin. Finally, making up numbers was a snow boarder who many of you won't know - Chris Wright - but not to worry we all know how snow boarders get in the way on the slopes!
Rich is the lucky chap who gets married, goes on honeymoon, gets back for barely a week and is off skiing with the lads. Not only that but he met Mark Davis on honeymoon!! Who has he spent the most time with?
We all met at Luton airport except for Adrian Chappell and Mark Davis who were going to arrive a day after the rest of us as thay had booked through SAGA holidays at a later date. From Luton we would fly to Zurich at which point a hire car (Golf Estate) arranged by Simon Richardson would enable us to drive to St. Anton, Austria.
After a half hour delay taking off from Luton we were on our way.
Whilst waiting for the luggage at Zurich airport Simon Richardson gave the paper work to Rich to go ahead and sort out the hire car and we would pick up his luggage. Rich glanced at the paperwork.
'One problem,' Rich said.
He paused and continued to look at the paperwork before saying again,
'One problem.'
'What?' replied Simon Richardson.
'You've hired the car from Geneva and...' he paused again, '... we're in Zurich.'
'No way.'
'Yes, you have.'
Simon Richardson wiped the sweat off his brow with a very concerned look. The rest of us were wondering how long we were going to be in the airport without a car. Anyway, we sent Rich off to see if he could get hold of a car while we waited for the luggage.
Whilst waiting it became clear this was actually going to be a very entertaining story for the rest of us to bring up over the next 30 years!!
Simon continued to be very concerned, rightfully so - but we consoled ourselves that this was indeed a classic cock up! Once we had all the luggage we headed to the rental car desk to see if Rich had managed to get Simon out of this mess....indeed he had, they had a Golf but not an estate - hmm, 5 of us with our luggage including ski boots, skis etc into a non-estate golf....fortunately, a few minutes later an Audi A6 had been conjured up and we were now far better off than ever. You've never seen a man look more relieved than Simon at that moment. So next time you see Mr. Richardson down at the squash club feel free to ask him what the difference is between Geneva and Zurich.
Having stayed over at a hotel half way between Zurich and St.Anton Friday night we were up early the next day and had a full days skiing on the Saturday. Rich led us through some trees, though he claims Chris was leading the way. Yes, through some trees - a little bit away off the piste, but far enough away that we were unable to turn back. He stops and comes to the conclusion that there is only one way forward - to squeeze over and through the trees. Not only that but we had to stop quickly as there were metal avalanche barriers in the way. Rich got through without injuries. We all followed and survived the only casualty being a bent ski pole belonging to Martin. Simon Barker, sweating profusely, appeared to have a tap in his body which gushed out water randomly throughout the day! Later that evening Adrian and Mark arrived and we made sure we got them upto speed on the car hire story!
A historic day - Monday January 12th 4.05pm - Mark Davis fell over skiing, leaving his ski 2 metres above him on the slope. This is the man that hasn't fallen over skiing in the last 20 years. Unfortunately, I can not repeat his words at the time, though he was definetly not happy!
5 of us hired an Off-Piste guide on the Wednesday whilst Mark (I've only fallen once in the last 20 years) Davis and Simon Barker hired an instructor to improve their techniques.

It was an enjoyable day, though the interesting part of the day came toward the end when Adrian struggled to maintain control down a narrow section where a snow plough was required - the guide, who was female, was doing a snow plough as was Martin but Adrian came perilously close to wiping Martin out down a cliff face. His claim was that he doesn't know how to snow plough. After a day off-piste skiing and Adrian claims he doesn't know how to snow plough?!
For those that don't know a snow plough is one of the first things you learn when you go skiing. As defined in the ski dictionary - The SNOW PLOUGH TURN is the first way of turning during skiing. The use of the beginners lift, small runs at the practise area open a totally new perspectives for the learner. Skiing becomes easier and effortless with regards to getting uphill. Satisfaction and pride fulfills the learner about the level reached. Above all the SNOW PLOUGH TURN is the platform for further steps in the learning curve. The coordination of the movements - PIVOTING - WEIGHTSHIFTING - EDGING are the mechanics of the SNOW PLOUGH TURN. These movements will be key elements in the following development of the skier. The ability to hold and control a straight snow plough over at least 5 to 8 meters is the basis for learning the SNOW PLOUGH TURN. The snow plough remains in place when linking turns, the outside leg is flexed in order to shift the weight on to the turning foot. To shift the body weight on to the turning foot, the skier flexes the ankle and knee of the outside leg. The upper body tilts slightly outside over the turning ski, the center of mass remains within the base of support.
There seems to be a lot of shifting of bodyweight, ah yes, this may be why Adrian can't snowplough - it's a good excuse to hold on to the guide while she shows him!
In the evening after the meal the day has proved to much for Simon Richardson as he sleeps at the table!
The following day, Simon Richardson (or should I say his secretary) sent flowers to his wife - this then seemed like a good idea to a few of the others. However, those that didn't send flowers would like it on the record that it was only those with secretaries that sent them!
More skiing the following days with Adrian cursing Chris - the snowboarder - for being in his way, for being in his line, for wiping the snow off the slopes and many other anti-snowboard comments. However, Chris took it all in good heart and continued to moan about nothing! Meanwhile, Simon Barker was thinking about calling for a plumber as the sweat was constantly dripping off his chin!
As for Martin, he just had major equipment failure through out the week. After the ski pole bending, his sallopates ripped, the skis came to the end of their life, he broke a ski pole and finally his ski boots, well they needed replacing about a century ago!
Now back to the squash!
FRANK LEE 2 V STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
Confidence was high in the team for this return match against Frank Lee after the cup success 2 weeks ago. Richard Barker was unable to play this week due to his THIRD holiday since Christmas so Simon Richardson was called up from the bench.
First on court was captain Simon Barker playing James Richardson. James started well playing a good short game catching Simon napping and took an early 4-0 lead in the first. A step forward from Simon stopped these winners and playing good length squash forced James to the back. Under too much pressure James now allowed Simon a comfortable recovery to take the first 9-4. The second saw James working harder and after an even game Simon lapsed and threw four points away to lose the second 9-7. 1-1 and a close match looked on the cards but Simon upped the pace causing James to struggle. The next two games went to Simon comfortably 9-2 and 9-4. One to Stamford.
Simon Richardson was on next against Dave Savage. After some reassuring words from the team such as "Richard only dropped 4 points when he played at 5 against this team" Simon started well. Playing controlled squash, allowing himself time to settle in Simon played some good rallies, hitting a good length to control the first and take it 9-6. The second started the same way as Simon forged ahead and confidence grew. This brought his downfall. Simon suddenly decided to go for winners from everything and hitting too many tins, Dave was back in the game and with his head up did enough to take the second 9-7. 1-1 now and suddenly Simon was looking in trouble. Dave capitalised on Simon's errors and continued through the next two games to give Simon a right good savaging to take the tie 3-1.
Jon Oakley was playing Chris Boswell next door. Chris was very fast around the court covering Jon's "disguised" drops and unorthodox shots. A tight first game saw Jon just edge it 9-7. The second Chris made fewer errors and taking the ball early forced Jon to the back of the court. Struggling to find his form Jon made error after error hitting more tins than a blind man in a supermarket. Chris kept his game steady to take the second 9-6. During the break Jon gave himself a good talking to and unable administer corporal punishment on himself, decided that detention was the only answer if he didn't pull his socks up. This obviously worked as the errors reduced enough to just gain him the advantage as he took the next two 9-6 and 9-6 to secure the tie 3-1. 2-1 to Stamford now.
Mark Smith on next against Jake Lowber, a somewhat sturdy player. The first few rallies were closely fought and after Mark had bounced off Jake a couple of times attempting to go through him he changed tack and took the long way round. Some nice boasts and excellent retrieving gave Mark the lead as he took the first 9-1. The second went the same way for a comfortable win 9-3. Concentration then failed Mark as he came out for the third in a coma. 3 minutes later it was 9-0 to Chris. Playing Marks favourite track and talking to him softly during the break revived him from his coma. The forth saw a revitalised player as he swept through Jake 9-1 to take the tie 3-1.
Finally Paul York played Terry Reynolds. An old adversary for Yorkie who had had some tough matches a few years ago. Terry though on this occasion seemed to be struggling for fitness and carrying an injury as Yorkie was able to comfortably control the game for an easy 9-1, 9-2, 9-3 victory and the match to Stamford.
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v FENLAND 1 (back to fixtures list)
Cruising....everybody won comfortably - a short report!
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v ST IVO (back to fixtures list)
Still unbeaten Stamford went into the match confidently. First on court (as they were the only ones to turn up on time) were the Barker brothers.
Richard played Jeremy Hyde. After a good knock up (waiting for the remaining Stamford players to arrive so we had a marker!) the game began only for the first crisis of the night to hit us. First point of the match saw Richard lunge for a shot and tweak his achilles. In true, team commitment tradition, Richard soldiered on venturing only inches from the T going for winners from anything – and hitting most of them. Helped by St Ivo not having their full strength team rich playing a weaker No5 cruised through 9-6, 9-6, 9-4 having moved no more than a step from the T. He then rapidly sped home to his personal physio for some ice and sympathy.
Simon played Jack White (a slip of a young lad). The match started with some vigour as Jack’s pace had Simon in awe. However once he’d sorted Jack out with a few mishits, bodyshots and acceleration rarely seen in a thirtysomething squash veteran, Simon took control and had a comfortable first game 9-4. The second went the same way for another 9-4 win. Jack, still running like Linford Cristie on speed got back into the third but Simon’s experience overcame to steal it 10-8 and take the tie 3-0.
Jon Oakley went next against a tall and wiry Bob Taylor. After a casual start by Jon, Bob built a lead up in the first and forced Jon to start running around. Some entertaining rallies saw Bob working very hard and Jon took advantage to take the first 9-7. More pressure on Bob in the second saw Jon comfortably controlling the rallies and working Bob hard. 9-3 to Jon. The third went the same, 9-6 to Jon as Bob practically imploded the court as he tried to suck more oxygen in. 3-0 to Stamford.
Mark Smith went next against Malcolm White. The game was delayed 5 minutes as Mark reeled of his list of injuries (just on the off chance he might start to lose). Once underway Mark started moving freely once a lead had been established. Good squash saw Mark take the first 9-3. The second saw Malcom sharper as he took shots earlier and Mark started to struggle. Then the second crisis of the night occurred: Mark suffered a twisted sock. After much cajoling and encouragement the said sock was righted and play continued. This setback clearly affected Mark as he lost the second 9-1 and the third 9-7. A strategy rethink at 2-1 down saw all injuries put on hold as Mark stormed the fourth 9-0. Malcolm, somewhat shell shocked that his opponent had been practically in his grave a game ago, couldn’t step up again and Mark took the fifth and the tie 3-2.
Finally Yorkie went on against Nigel Taylor. Yorkie’s power was too much for Nigel and even though Yorkie was looser than a size 16 dress on Maxine from Corrie, he still kept Nigel on the back foot. A safe 9-6 win in the first followed by a struggle in the second with Nigel gaining a couple of game points before Yorkie pulled it back to take it 10-8. Nigel struggling on stamina gave Yorkie an easy third 9-6 and the tie 3-0. An excellent result 5-0 and another 20 points in the bag but probably with the loss of Richard for a couple of games with his achilles injury. Off to the subs bench for me to call up one of my super subs.
HUNTS COUNTY 2 v STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
As the season heads into the last quarter a perusal of the league tables finds Stamford in a very strong position. Currently 53 points with only 5 matches to go including tonight’s. Maximum points tonight would make our position almost untouchable requiring the second place team to take maximum points (20) for the remaining four matches and Stamford to average less than 7 per match.
First on tonight was Simon (super sub) Richardson against Peter Dampney. Simon was looking to avenge his only other appearance for the team when he had a crushing defeat against Frank Lee in January. Simon was exceptionally “fired up” for this one and could be found pacing up and down the balcony area and scowling at people as he focused the mind in preparation for his titanic battle. As the game got underway Peter got into the groove early and playing a good short game forced too many errors from Simon. As the points drifted away, Simon kept his focus which at times was burning holes through Peter, but couldn’t stop the flow, as Peter took the first 9-3. Some exceptionally visionary advice from the captain during the break saw Simon’s game improve and he took control of the second producing some good kills. A valiant fight from Peter couldn’t stay with Simon’s pace. 9-6 to Simon. The third turned into a marathon battle as both players realised the importance of this one. Fortunes went both ways - as the tension rose and the odd error crept in, Simon’s racket could clearly be seen ricocheting around the court as it was propelled with some disgust! Finally though it was Simon that came out on top to steal it 10-8. 2-1 to Simon now and as the fourth began fitness began to tell as Peter started to flag. Simon took full advantage and romped through to take it 9-2 and the tie 3-1. Well played.
Simon Barker went next against Andy Fuller. Andy was clearly not overly confident as he told Simon before the game started “You won’t have much trouble with me tonight - I’m not up to much at the moment.” He did put up some resistance in the first though but Simon did enough to take it 10-8. The next two were comfortable wins 9-1 and 9-5.
Jon Oakley played Dave Moream and as normal Jon had a slow start suffering from lack of energy having wasted much of it explaining to the lads what a stressful day he’d had (again). Never mind Jon - half term soon and another couple of weeks off! Anyway I digress. Dave being that bit sharper to the ball took the first 9-7. The second saw a more active Jon as he started picking up the short balls and put Dave under pressure. Able now to dominate the T Jon took the next 9-3. The next two went Jon’s way 9-7 and 9-5 as Dave was unable to deal with Jon’s game.
Mark Smith on next against Paul Goodman. The first was very lively with both players running for everything. Errors from both players though meant the game could of gone either way. Finally Mark nipped in at the end to take it 9-7. The second went the same way but Mark this time making more errors and allowing Paul to take this one 9-5. The third finally saw Mark playing well and by cutting the unforced errors out was able to take control and dominate the third and fourth taking then both 9-3.
Finally Yorkie was on against John Ford. Yorkie was much too strong and given too much time on the ball demonstrated by his numerous lucky nicks and backhand cut drops from the back of the court. John was unable to get into the match until the third having lost the first two 9-6 and 9-1. He did produce a battle in the third making Yorkie work for his points and produced a game point but was unable to clinch it and Yorkie did the business 10-9 to take the tie 3-0. 5-0 to Stamford and another 20 points in the bag!
ELY PARADISE 2 v STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
Wednesday night was here again and Ely were our foes tonight; an unknown quantity as they pulled out of the first round match. They did have one known player to us though and he was Galen Lecheminint, a semi-pro playing for “fun” in div 2 and yet to drop a game. Yorkie had his sights set high on giving him a good tonking when disaster happened: Whilst bending down to pick up a squash ball a few days prior to this match Yorkie hurt his leg. After much discussion he decided that amputation was probably not required but it would need complete rest till at least Thursday. So with Yorkie decimated by a pulled shoe lace, sorry calf muscle, it was down to super sub Simon Richardson to stand in again. I should also mention at this point, whilst driving down to Ely across the fens, Jonathon Oakley was clearly heard to say “WHY DO THEY BUILD THESE ROADS SO BUMPY?” After narrowly avoiding a major car crash due to hysteria in the car we explained to him the phenomenon of subsidence!
First on was Simon Richardson playing Ian Travers. Simon, now match savvy, had left any pre match nerves behind, and started well, playing to a good length and moving well. Ian attacked but Simon kept digging in and took the first 9-6. The roles reversed in the second with Simon making a few too many mistakes allowing Ian in 9-5. The third was a monumental battle, both players working hard with Simon taking it 10-8 to go 2-1 up. The fourth started well as Simon continued to work Ian hard and led to the half way point before dropping a few quick points to lose 9-6. Tied at 2-2 it could have gone either way. Ian stormed through the fifth racking up the points to go 7-1 up before finally fitness told and suddenly the tank was empty. Simon took advantage to claw back and finally take the fifth 9-7 and the tie 3-2. Well played.
Mark Smith was on the other court playing Galen Lecheminint. With the ball flying on this court Mark struggled to find his normal control as Galen hit the corners effortlessly. The first slipped way easily from Mark 9-4 as mistakes were abound. The second saw a more confident Mark hitting harder and more accurately to put some pressure on Galen who produced some excellent full stretch drives with a flick of his wrist making it very difficult to know where the ball was going. A better game from Mark but Galen doing enough to take it 9-6. The third started well for Mark taking a 5 point lead. This proved a tight game as Galen, playing continually to a length, had to work to stay in the game. Finally he leveled the score to 8-8 and a battle for the last points finally saw Galen steal it 10-9 and the tie 3-0.
Simon Barker was on next against Fernando Gris. On a hot court with the ball absolutely flying both Simon and Fernando seemed determined to out hit each other. The first game started with the ball hitting mach 2 with each strike of the racket as Fernando massacred every shot. Simon struggled to cope with the speed of the ball and made too many errors losing the first 9-3. The second went the same with Simon battling to stay with the pace of the ball but again was unable to put Fernando under any significant pressure eventually going down 9-6. The third saw better squash from Simon as he fought well and started moving Fernando and causing mistakes from him. Simon saw a glimmer of light and ran for everything but was still unable to tame Fernando’s power as he took the third 9-7 and the tie 3-0. Stamford now 2-1 down and under pressure.
Jon Oakley went on next against Andrew (Ely). As the first got under way this looked like the makings of an excellent match as both players played tight, good length and width and were looking sharp. The first went both ways up to 5-5 when Jon hit a couple of lovely disguised cross court drops to steal a couple of points and suddenly Andrew’s world fell apart. 9-5 to Jon in the first who then ran away with the next two 9-0 and 9-1 for a well needed win but disappointing game of squash. Jon would like it known he then did 7 mins 0.06 secs on the concept 2 rower. A personal best!
Finally Richard Barker was on against Tony Walton. Richard had a flyer in the first as accuracy and a slow ball proved too much for Tony. Richard took the 1st comfortably 9-2. The second started well and Richard, though not flying round the court, retained the advantage and the “T” to take the second 9-5. Things looking good for Stamford from the balcony but little did we know what was to come and a couple of points in the third a recurring calf injury suddenly looked very ominous as Richard began limping around the court. Tony took the fourth 9-7 to recover to 2-1 but at the start of the fourth it was apparent that the calf injury was too much and Richard was forced to retire forfeiting the tie 3-2.
So Stamford suffer their first defeat of the season and with the team in a sorry state in disrepair things don’t look too healthy for the last few games. Fortunately the damage has been done and we have enough points to have all but won the league. Crown lodge at home next week and the “lovely Stephanie” returns.
STAMFORD GREEN MAN v CROWN LODGE 1 (back to fixtures list)
Still recoiling from last weeks defeat and with an injury list worse than Casualty at PDH on a Friday night the Stamford lads were cautious about any predictions for this match. With both Yorkie and Richard now injured and unable to play, a first appearance for Paul Swift and the return of Simon Richardson (now almost a regular) was the order of the day. The team order for tonight was Mark 1, Jon 2, Simon B 3, Simon R 4, and Paul 5.
First on was Simon R playing Robin Attlesey. This proved an entertaining match with Simon playing some tight accurate squash, matched equally by Robin. The first game was tight with Robin just nicking it 10-8. Simon came back strongly in the second for a comfortable 9-3 win. Good squash in the third from Simon as he again dominated the game keeping Robin under pressure to take it 9-6. Fortunes changed in the fourth though as Robin fought for everything to take it 9-4 and level the tie 1-1. The fifth saw both players working hard until finally Simon had match ball at 8-7. Unable to clinch it Robin clawed back to 8-8 and continued on to win 10-8 and take the first tie 3-2.
Paul Swift was on the other court against Peter Askew. Paul started well, taking the ball early and controlling the game and did enough to force mistakes from Peter and take the first 9-6. The second saw too many errors from Paul and it was the turn of Peter to take advantage of the “free” points to take it 9-6. The next two games were taken one each to make it 2-2. The fifth saw Paul struggle to keep consistency with Peter now in control and finally taking it 9-3 and the tie 3-2.
So Stamford 2-0 down and in trouble. Jon Oakley on next against Paul Swallow. A very strong start form Jon playing great width and length added to some excellent retrieving saw a convincing win 9-0, 9-2 for the first two games. Jon relaxed in the third and this let Paul back in as he fought hard to take it 9-4. The fourth saw a more determined Jon as battled well and stepped up the pace to take the game 9-8 and the tie 3-1.
Simon B on now against Stephanie Marriot. After Jon Oakley’s fawning display, that destroyed the pride of men folk when he played her during the first half of the season and barely scrapped a win 10-9 in the fifth, Barker was determined to set the record straight. Simon took about tackling a somewhat unorthodox style of movement from Steph with vigour and after two close games Simon was 2-0 winning them 9-7 and 9-6. It was Simon’s turn to relax now and suddenly Steph was back in the match. Simon was now getting more and more frustrated trying to cope with Steph’s style he had to resort to the occasional “dropped shoulder” as he made the effort to get around Steph. Steph took the third 9-4 and the fourth 9-7. 2-2 and game on. The fifth though proved an anti-climax as Simon took control and stepped the pace up for a comfortable 9-1 win.
With the match squared at 2-2 now the pressure was on Mark playing Robert Murfitt. A quick first game with Mark either playing winners or tinners as he lost it 9-7. Much the same in the second but without the winners as Mark continually found the top inch of the tin to go down 9-3. A pep talk from the captain and top tips such as “don’t hit the tin” obviously worked as Mark came back in the third to take it comfortably 9-1. Was this the comeback? Sadly no, as the fourth saw Mark again finding the tin, letting Robert back in to take it 9-4 and the match 3-2.
So another loss for the Stamford boys. If only I had a football boot to kick around! Another tough one next week, Portugal Place.
PORTUGAL PLACE v STAMFORD GREEN MAN (back to fixtures list)
Recent results had not been good for Stamford and tonight’s match saw another new face in the team, Adrian Hargreaves. Yorkie was back post injury but Richard B was still sidelined with a pulled calf. Tonight’s team order is Yorkie at 1, Jon Oakley 2, Adrian Hargreaves 3, Si Barker (captain) 4 and Si Richardson at 5.
Si Richardson was up first against Stewart McTavish. Simon, fresh from a weekends skiing, commented “I always play crap, straight from skiing so I got a game in yesterday and got the crap game out of my system” He then went on court and preceded to play crap! Seriously though Simon was up against a very strong player and as determined as Simon was to rally the ball up and down the wall Stewart picked the ball off putting it away consistently. Simon ran for everything but couldn’t contain Stewart who had a comfortable win 9-0, 9-4, 9-2.
Captain on next who was determined to seek revenge on his opponent Jaques Van Oorschot for the 3-1 defeat during the first half of the season. Jaques though had other ideas and Simon, making way too many errors, made the task easier for him. The first went to Jaques 9-3 by simply taking the ball early and keeping Simon under pressure. Simon played better in the second but with still too many errors inexplicably lost it 9-1. The third saw a valiant fight back from Simon as he finally managed to force some errors from Jaques, but couldn’t do enough to steal it as Jaques took the third 9-7. Stamford now 2-0 down and in trouble again.
Next on was Adrian playing Jaco Vermaak. Adrian had an excellent start with Jaco making unforced errors to allow Adrian an easy 9-3 in the first. The second saw Jaco tighten up, find a better length and take control of the rallies. Adrian’s turn to make the errors as Jaco took it 9-7. The third was an excellent display of quality squash as both players hit accurate shots around the court. Adrian though always just had the edge and took the third 9-2. The fourth was an almost exact copy of the third as Adrian sealed it 9-2 and the tie 3-1. Was the comeback on?
Jon Oakley on now, against Hussein Said, (who made Yorkie work very hard in the first half of the season). Hussein started slowly giving Jon time to settle in. Jon, looking sharp around the court was quick to pick up everything and caught Hussein with the short ball. 9-3 to Jon in the first. Hussein stepped up in the second and Jon, looking a little too casual made the errors to give Hussein the second 9-6. The third began with a much more focused Jon playing excellent length and width, retrieving superbly and even when under pressure finding a great shot to get out of trouble. Hussein had no answer to this as he buckled to a 9-0 defeat. The fourth followed on with Jon totally dominating for a convincing 9-1 win to take the tie 3-1 and square the match 2-2.
Finally Yorkie was on playing Ben Bradshaw. Pressure was on Yorkie as the match relied on his result. The first saw Yorkie a little cautious (technical jargon for moving round court like a slug on a go slow) which we put down to him protecting his recently injured calf. This allowed Ben an easy ride in the first to take it 9-6. The second, Yorkie came out on a mission and suddenly found that extra half a yard and massacred just about everything into a selection of nicks. Ben found himself moving up to two paces forward of the T just to give himself a chance of picking the ball up before it bounced for the fourth time. 9-1 to Yorkie. A nail biting third then commenced as Yorkie threw in a few tins as well as the nicks and with Bens confidence lifted his retrieving was awesome. Yorkie stuck to his game though and snuck the third 9-7. The fourth was a real battle and with Yorkie’s little legs starting to fade the tension spectating was high. It was very even up to 7-7 then Yorkie clinched a point to give him match ball - but couldn’t finish it. With Yorkie’s tank about empty he didn’t need a fifth and finally on his third match ball a winning kill secured it for him 3-1 and the match 3-2.
Well played the top three and Stamford back winning. That result secured promotion to Cambs div 1 next year. Brampton at home next week and then the following week the cup semis at home. Come on the big boys!

STAMFORD GREEN MAN v KIMBOLTON
CUP SEMI FINAL (back to fixtures list)
This was Stamford’s biggest challenge of the season. Kimbolton, Cambs premiership team who finished 4th in the table arrived with a full strength team. Stamford knew the pressure was on and tonight would be a taster for what we can expect next season, now that we have secured promotion to the Cambs premier div ourselves of what the best of the premiership could offer.
First on was Simon Barker playing Pramjet Deol. Pramjet started well and from the off found his touch taking the pace off the ball well and playing some lovely touch squash. This forced Simon into a serious running game needing to cover the front of the court. Struggling to relax Simon made too many errors losing the first 9-4. The second saw an improvement but Simon still not able to get forward enough to have any time on the ball forcing either an error playing the drop or a loose shot to the back where Pramjet was waiting. 9-6 to Pramjet. The third saw a fight back from Simon as he finally got that yard forward and started to cover Pramjets short shots. Better drops from Simon and good recovery shots took him to 8-8. Disappointingly though. he was unable to capitalise and lost the third 10-8.
Next on was Jon Oakley against Matt Towers. This was the best game of the night as both players produced some outstanding squash. Matt starting better, worked the ball well causing a few mistakes from Jon as he lost the first 9-4. More relaxed in the second Jon started playing some fantastic squash. His movement around court was very quick as he picked everything up and hit a lovely length and width. Too tight for Matt the next two went to Jon 9-7 and 9-5. The fourth saw Matt get back in control as he edged it all the way himself playing some great shots. 2-2 in the tie now. As they started the fifth, Jon, showing great determination and concentration had a flying start storming to a 6-0 lead before Matt got a grip and began fighting back. As he picked the points up the tension rose, but Jon kept his head and took control again to take it 9-6. A great result for Stamford and Jon. Well played.
Next on was Adrian Hargreaves playing Gary Milner. Gary, obviously fired up for this, dominated the T and massacred everything Adrian hit. Gary playing some excellent squash, taking the ball very early, hitting very hard and to a good width kept Adrian at the back of the court under serious pressure. Gary, too strong in the first took it 9-0. the second started the same as Gary stormed away to a 5-0 lead. Adrian finally grabbed a point and suddenly found himself back in the game as Gary dropped his game hitting a number of tins and then it was 5-5. Adrian now, forcing himself to take the ball early, was battling well but Gary cut the errors out and started applying the pressure again forcing mistakes from Adrian. The second finally going to Gary 9-7. The third saw Adrian again having to work hard for everything but Gary, still faster to the ball, kept Adrian on the back foot and had a comfortable 9-0 to take the tie 3-0.
Mark Smith next playing Steve Davis (much more interesting than the other). From the first point it was apparent that Mark was going to have to win each point 3 or 4 times as Steve’s speed and outstanding court movement got him to everything that Mark hit with seemingly half an hour to spare. Excellent rallying saw a very entertaining tie. Both players running hard but Mark was always under intense pressure as Steve picked up anything that didn’t roll out of the nick. The first went to Steve 9-3, the second 9-0 and valiant attempt by Mark in the third to stop the rot failed as Steve wrapped it up 9-6.
Last on was Yorkie playing Steve Barlow. Steve having an awesome touch and a vast array of shots was to prove a handful for Yorkie. The first started evenly but then Steve started throwing a working boast in from the back of the court and with Yorkie forced to do a few shuttles the omens weren’t good. A hard first saw Steve have the edge to take it 9-5. The second, was dominated by Steve as he pushed Yorkie around the court, playing some lovely touch shots. Yorkie fought hard putting winners away when the opportunity arose but Steve was controlling the T and secured the second 9-3. A better third from Yorkie as it went evenly up to halfway before a couple of errors under pressure gave Steve the edge and he went through to finish it 9-6.
So a convincing win for Kimbolton but credit to the Stamford lads as they fought for everything making it a very entertaining evenings squash. My thanks go to all who came and supported us.
With the season now over, to recap: Stamford are division two winners promoted to the premier league and Cambs cup semi-finalists. An excellent first year in Cambridgeshire. As this is the last match and report of the season I would also, as team captain, like to thank the team that has supported me this year. Whether they played one, or all 17 matches their support has made my job enjoyable. I would also like to thank our sponsors for the year: Stamford Green Man (Tony Shilling and his staff, excellent food, service, beer – a top boozer!!) AWARE promotions for the team shirts and Movenpick ice cream – probably the best ice cream in the world!. Cheers.
STAMFORD GREEN MAN - END OF SEASON REPORT (back to fixtures list)
Last season Stamford Green Man squash team comfortably won division one in the Peterborough leagues and with a desire to play squash to a higher standard approached Cambridgeshire to join their leagues. We were offered a place in division two and took it.
Unsure of how good the standard was in the new league, the Stamford lads were mentally well up for every game. This showed as we had an excellent season resulting in winning division two and getting to the semi-finals of the Herewood cup.

So next season we look forward to playing the best players in the county in division one. Our team this year consisted of Paul York, Mark Smith, Jonathon Oakley, Simon Barker (capt), Richard Barker, Adrian Hargreaves, Simon Richardson and Paul Swift.
Our thanks go to our sponsors The Green Man Pub, Movenpick ice cream and AWARE Promotions.
